Community and events
Barclays Jersey is more than a local branch. We’re part of your community, actively supporting and participating in events of all sizes right across the island.
The Barclays Jersey Boat Show was first held in 2008 and Barclays is proud to have been title sponsor since 2010. The Show, which is held on the first bank holiday in May each year, is the largest free entry event in the Channel Islands and sees attendance figures of approximately 35,000 across the three days. It showcases all aspects of the marine industry and is supported by the Royal Navy, who bring a number of vessels to the island for this event. The Barclays Duck has become an icon for the Show and was instrumental in raising over £17,000 for our nominated charities in 2016.
The Prince’s Trust, Jersey receives on-going support from Barclays in Jersey. Volunteering staff have designed and delivered sessions in money management and interview skills, which are based on the Barclays' Life Skills programme. We actively support the 12 week “team” programme which the Trust runs three times a year, and the XL programme which supports 16 to 17 year olds. As part of the interview skills programme, young people are brought to our offices at Broad Street where our staff run structured interview sessions with them, providing both verbal and written feedback which they are able to use in their portfolio work for the Team course.
The Channel Islands Student Business Challenge was set up in Jersey by Barclays in conjunction with three other corporate partners. Its purpose is to encourage and support entrepreneurial thinking in young people aged 11 – 16. Teams of students are given start-up capital of £100 and the challenge of running their own business for ten weeks. In 2016, the programme was extended to Guernsey, and we’re delighted to see the number of participants increasing every year. In 2016 the students acheived a staggering cumulative turnover of £20,000 raising almost £5,000 for local charities.
