Volatility: friend or foe?
William Hobbs, Head of Investment Strategy, UK and Europe, talks to Rupert Howard, Senior Portfolio Manager, about one of the most challenging starts to the year ever experienced.
Despite a tumultuous January for equity markets, Rupert believes that the data appears more encouraging than worrisome. As a result, he has been trying to take advantage of the sell-off and put some money back to work in portfolios, focusing specifically on the US and Europe.
Elsewhere, emerging markets have struggled for some time due to depressed commodity prices. Rupert believes that the emerging markets may now be embarking on a recovery phase and is therefore starting to reduce the current underweight stance in portfolios.
Meanwhile, elevated levels of volatility in the market have created opportunities which Rupert has been able to exploit, resulting in attractive returns to clients over the short to medium term.
