Barclays in Gibraltar
Barclays is scaling back its operations in Gibraltar. In January 2014, we announced we would delay issuing notices to close active accounts. This was to allow our customers and clients time to consider the recently formed Gibraltar International Bank as a possible alternative to Barclays, alongside other financial institutions located in or outside Gibraltar.
You may have seen Gibraltar International Bank’s recent advertisements regarding its intention to open for business in early 2015. We have now written to our customers to give them notice to close their bank accounts with Barclays.
We aim to make the move away from Barclays as smooth as possible for our customers. The account closure date for Gibraltar residents actively using their accounts is 29 May 2015. This extended notice period will give our customers enough time to make arrangements with an alternative bank and we strongly encourage them to close their accounts at the earliest opportunity, prior to this date.
For our customers resident overseas and those who have not used their Barclays account(s) for at least six months, we have given notice to close bank accounts by 30 January 2015.
Our branch on Main Street will close on 29 May 2015.
While we will no longer provide local banking or counter services, we will retain a presence in Gibraltar. This will focus on supporting current lending, our larger corporate and larger intermediary relationships.
We continue to work closely with the Government and other key parties in Gibraltar to ensure our customers are supported through the changes we are making.
