Toby Cross, Portfolio Management Specialist, talks to Arne Hassel, Chief Investment Officer, about a relatively eventful month for investors.

The message throughout the year has always been to focus on economic and market fundamentals and not get drawn into the political events and commentary. Arne believes that it is because of investors’ focus on the US economy’s improving fundamentals that equity markets rallied following the surprise outcome of the US presidential election. Meanwhile, in the Italian referendum on constitutional reform, markets were relatively unchanged by the ‘No’ vote as the likelihood of this outcome had already been heavily discounted by the markets.

As the end to the current economic cycle does not yet appear imminent, Arne believes that the recent sell-off in Emerging Markets Equities has presented an attractive opportunity to add to the existing overweight to risk assets in portfolios.
